Amusing Canon Lawyer musings….

Welcome to the Blog of the Antilles Canon Law Society where the canon lawyers of the Region will share their musings on things canonical and relevant to the life of the Church…

Welcome to our Blog !

Today is the 7th of July and the Annual Convention of the Antilles Canon Law Society just took place a week ago. A new executive was chosen and I have the honour to address you as the new President of the Antilles Canon Law Society. Allow me on this first post to share the note I sent to the canonists of our region last Wednesday, the 30th of June 2021 just after my election:

Dear Sisters and Brothers  in Christ,
Fellow canonists !

I want to take these first few moments after the election to greet you all and thank the Past Executive for the hard work and putting all of this together during this time of pandemic.

I am most happy of the fact that Bishop John is our liaison Bishop. In him the « East and the West » come together. I will count on his wise counsel and expertise as we go forward.

I wish to congratulate the other members of the New Executive. I wish to form a WhatsApp group immediately so we can get to work. Kindly e-mail your WhatsApp number to me. My own number is (876) 469-2542.

We have many challenges to meet. I would envision our Canon Law society as also being a « think tank » of things canonical to better serve the local church and the Bishops of our region. Articles and canonical issues will need to be written, ideas exchanged for our Society to have an impact.

A few years ago we had Mitis Judex come out with the challenges it brought. Now we have an almost completely revamped Penal Code which our dear Pope Francis has just published. This will certainly affect the way the Bishops of the world will have to deal with certain issues. Whilst our role as Tribunal Personnel is important, we MUST be at the forefront of things in this new area ! It will take time and effort.

As time goes on, it would be great if all the Bishops of our AEC region had the « reflex » so to speak to turn to our ACLS as the locus to get help and advice.

Finally, because I am a native French speaker, I would like to reach out to the three French (Arch)Dioceses to see how their canonists could also form part of our Family and bring their unique contribution as the French Bishops also bring their own special contribution to the AEC.

Please pray for me ! We are on this journey together !

Fraternally yours in laetitia Christi!

Msgr. Michael Palud, C.O.
